A Killer Tool for Organization

In keeping with our theme of organization from yesterday, today I will reveal the tool that I use to keep track of all of my important information:

  • Lists of all kinds (shopping list, to do list, wish list, etc…)
  • Bills and receipts
  • Recipes
  • Product Manuals
  • Meeting notes and presentations

Imagine a tool that could handle all of this information with ease and was totally portable.  Stick around and I’ll show you that not only does such a tool exist, you can use it for FREE!

I rely heavily on electronic tools to run my life.  I have a smartphone (iPhone 4S), personal laptop (Google Chromebook), desktop computer (Mac), work laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad) as well as an iPad and Kindle Fire reader.  While your first reaction is probably “what a geek”, your second reaction is that each of these devices is totally different.  Different manufacturer, different operating system, different purpose.  The reason I have so many (other than being a geek) is that I use each in a different situation.  I may be traveling for work, or at the kids ball practice or sitting in the car waiting to pick someone up (I have 4 kids that all are in to different activities, so I do a lot of chauffeuring).

Anyway, the point is that I always have a different tool with me.  When I used to take notes in a paper notebook or keep my bills in a physical file cabinet, I quickly realized that I never had the information I needed with me when I needed it.  I never have much time at home to sit and complete work as I am always on the go, so being able to do a little bit here and there was essential for me.

Low and behold after just a short amount of searching I found a tool that would honestly do everything I needed AND was compatible with every one of my electronic devices!  This tool is called Evernote and promises to enable you to Remember Everything, Capture anything, access anywhere and find things fast.  I’ve been using this tool daily for 2 years now and I can confirm that it really does deliver on it’s promises.

It runs on just about any device (PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Web Browser, etc…) and it automatically syncs data between any and all of your devices.  Plus it saves text, images, PDFs and more and makes them all searchable.  Imagine saving a receipt from an auto repair center.  2 years later you encounter a similar problem and the mechanic asks if you’ve ever had this particular part replaced before (happened to me just this week).  A quick search of Evernote and I found my receipt from 2 years ago and saw that the part had NOT been replaced before… but a similar one had.

This product is simply amazing.  The secret to it’s success is YOU.  You must enter absolutely ALL of your information into it for it to become useful.  I take every piece of paper that shows up in my house that I want to keep and I scan it into Evernote.  Bills, receipts, offers from retailers for some special deal that I want to remember, presentations from work, etc…   They are then saved, indexed and synced between all devices.

Best of all Evernote is 100% free.  You can install it on all of your devices and start using it immediately.  There is a premium version that (currently) costs $45 per year, but, unlike other products, the premium product is not required in order to successfully use the product.  Premium allows bigger uploads, faster searching and the ability to index PDF files.  If you save a lot of PDF files, then premium may be worth the price ($4 per month is still cheap), but, otherwise you can start using it today and see just how helpful it can be.

Just put all of your information into it, then install the application on each and every device you own.  Suddenly organization will be within your reach!
